Resolve an 'Ink System Failure' or 'System Supply Problem' message for printers that use HP 178, 364, 564, 655, 862, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906, 907, 908, 909, 910, 912, 914, 915, 916, 917, 918, 919, 920, 923, 924, 925, 934, and 935 cartridges.
Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.
Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.
Glue residue from the label or debris on the cartridge vent might cause an error.
Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
Push in the tab on a cartridge, and then pull the cartridge from the slot.
Do not leave the cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the printer and the cartridges.
If the cartridge has the orange pull-tab attached, remove it.
Use a pin or paper clip to remove any debris or excess adhesive from the vent on top of the cartridge.
Reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot, and then press down on it until it snaps into place.
Repeat these steps to clean the vent on the other cartridges.
Install a new set of cartridges to resolve certain ink system-related errors.
Obtain new cartridges. HP recommends genuine HP cartridges.
Contact HP Customer Support to obtain replacement cartridges if the cartridges or printer are under warranty.
Purchase cartridges at the HP Store or a local retailer.
Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
Remove a cartridge, and then insert the new cartridge into the slot.
Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridges.
If the previous steps have not resolved the issue, contact HP Support to replace the printhead or service the printer.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.
Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.
Shake the cartridges to verify they contain ink.
Turn on the printer, and then open the door or lid to the cartridge access area.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
Push each ink cartridge to remove it.
Shake the cartridge to verify that it contains ink.
If the cartridge contains ink, push it back into its slot until it snaps into place.
If the cartridge does not contain ink, replace it with a new cartridge.
Repeat these steps to remove and check all the cartridges.
Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.
Reseat the printhead if your printer has a removeable printhead with a latch.
Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
Look for a latch on the carriage. This step applies only to printers with carriage latches.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Lift the carriage latch, slightly lift the printhead, lower the printhead back into the carriage, wiggle the printhead left and right, and then lower the carriage latch until it stops.
Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
If the error message still displays, repeat the steps to reseat the printhead up to three times.
