HP Notebook PCs - Purchasing a replacement AC power adapter

Purchase a replacement AC power adapter that is designed for your notebook if the original one fails. You might also want to purchase an additional power supply for travel or use in an alternate location.

Test the power adapter

Use one or more methods to check the operation of the AC power adapter.

Check the power icons

Use the system tray icons to confirm the AC adapter does not work.

  1. Connect the output cord from the AC adapter to the notebook, and then plug in the power cord to a working electrical outlet.

  2. Check the power icon in the system tray.

    • If the icon resembles a power cord, and if moving the cursor over the icon displays the On AC Power message, the AC adapter works.

    • If the icon resembles a battery when the AC adapter is connected, the adapter does not work.

Check the AC power adapter (removable battery only)

Check if the AC power adapter powers the notebook when the battery is removed.

  1. Turn off the notebook.

  2. Remove the battery from the notebook.

  3. Connect the power adapter, and then turn on the notebook. The notebook should start and operate normally.

If the notebook does not start and operate normally, the power adapter does not work.
